It's August! Well, in about 1/2 an hour.
My word of the month is 'blender'. I love that word.

Buffalo Soldiers, which I just saw today, is an extremely enjoyable movie. Although not really a satire as such, just more of a straight black comedy/drama, Joaquin Phoenix still makes for an extremely effective anti-hero, and Ed Harris (I'm a big fan, although he was pretty poor in The Hours) was really great as a fairly clueless but endearing Colonel. Some really great moments--Phoenix being forced to shoot his prized Merc by asshole Sgt. Robert E. Lee (seriously, that's his name, well played by Scott Glenn), a tank rampaging through Germany and blowing up a gas station when piloted by a bunch of whacked-out soldiers, and a really great shot of two soldiers, high on heroin, stabbing each other with bayonets and grinning. Plus, very refreshing to see the US military portrayed in this light at this time.
*** 1/2

Albums I've bought this year:

Elephant, The White Stripes--an excellent record. Almost equal to the brilliant White Blood Cells, IMO.
Ether Song, Turin Brakes--not as good as their debut The Optimist, but still a bunch of great songs...very soothing stuff.
Fever To Tell, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs--I loved it when I bought it, and all it's done is grow on me. All the tracks are great: especially in the last three (excluding Yeah! New York), when the band really comes into its own. Well worth buying.
Fire, The Electric Six--Very very silly, but still a lot of fun to listen to. Plus, I got it for 8 bucks, so what's the harm?
Gotham!, Radio 4--This is probably from last year, but I really like this record. Very very cool.
Hail To The Thief, Radiohead--More terrifically original stuff from the true gods that are Radiohead. Essential.
Youth And Young Manhood, Kings of Leon--Even better than I expected. Probably one of my favorite purchases of the year from those bearded dudes.

And that's it, which is pretty sad. Must buy more.
Also, I've checked out The New Pornographers, after Josh Timmerman from OW highly reccomended them...I got some stuff from their album Mass Romantic, and must get more, because it's fantastic. Please check them out, it's really great poppy rock stuff.

Might as well post what I've seen so far this year--this is going by american release dates, as it makes everything so much easier. I rate films out of 5 stars. My list:

2/City of God ***** (Fernando Meirelles)

Hi anyone and everyone, this is me blog spot, as inspired by Josh T on Oscarwatch. Mostly I'll just be spilling my guts about any movies or music i happen to see or hear. Hope you derive some pleasure from it all.
