Back from vacation in France. Have seen two films, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Pirates of the Carribean. Breakfast at Tiffany's started terribly, but I warmed up to the movie and did enjoy it, mainly for Hepburn's adorable performance. Much of the movie was no good--George Peppard was fairly flat as the male lead and Mickey Rooney's Mr. Yunioshi can only be regarded as offensive now. Still, I enjoyed it as a whole, especially as a New York movie.
Pirates of the Carribean was incredibly enjoyable. It would have been a decently fun movie without Johnny Depp, but with him it becomes one of the most entertaining things I've seen all year. I'm going to see it again tomorrow.

I just saw Good Bye Lenin!, a German comedy, which I very much enjoyed. While not being a farce (as the plot would suggest--a son trying to convince his bed-ridden mother who has just come out of a coma that the Berlin wall hasn't fallen & East Germany is still Communist) it is still very funny at times, but also touching (especially in the relationship between the mother & son, both played well by Katrin Sass and Daniel Bruhl) and poignant. The ending drags slightly and isn't made sufficiently clear (although I understood it) but this is still a very charming and witty film.
